Dickey 1 Hits Phils
August 14th 2010 16:33
You cannot say enough good things about R.A. Dickey and the job he has done this year for the Mets. Dickey and his knuckleball had a major test last night, the fightin' Phils. Dickey brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Cole Hamels blooped a base into right field to break up the no hitter and sending the drought to 7,759 games without a Mets pitcher throwing a no-hitter.
With that being said, R.A. Dickey has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this year. Once being called up, Dickey won his first six games before losing four of his next six. Unfortunately, it was not Dickey's fault, who continued to pitch well. In those six games the Mets were outscored 26 to 12, with only ten of those charged to Dickey.
What I love about R.A. is his grit and determination to succeed. He is a fierce competitor, which are few and far between on this Mets team. He never lets a bad game get to him and he always strives for better on his next outing. He really was called up to fill the starts when Maine and Perez went down. However, he has developed into a number two or three pitcher in the rotation now. It is a nice story to see a journeyman, like Dickey, contribute in a big way to a club. The Mets still are nine games back of the Braves; however it is certainly possible a start like last night could be a spark for this team moving forward.
