My blog has taken over this domain. Therefore, this will be the new location for "New York Metropolitans."

Feeling Bad for Jerry..

September 22nd 2010 04:11

The Mets were mathematically eliminated from the postseason tonight after their 5-2 loss to the Marlins. This will also pretty much close the door on the Jerry Manuel era in Flushing.

Lately, I have been feeling bad for Jerry. It must be hard to attempt to keep a ball club interested when they are just playing out their schedule; especially when the Yankees, only miles away, are in a pennant race. To make matters worse Jerry had to hear Joe Torre in the beginning of the week explain how we would take calls from Fred Wilpon on a Mets managerial offer.

Jerry didn't take the Torre's quotes too well. Any discussion of a managerial job currently filled shows a lack of integrity and disrespect, Manuel explained.

"I don't know him on a personal basis. But when things like that come out or are said, you question integrity. That's what comes to my mind. Like I said, I don't know him on a personal level to say whether he's that or that. And I did not see, or I have not read, exactly what has been said. All I know is what I hear. And I don't go to look for it."

Even though everyone knows Torre meant nothing by it and was simply answering a question in an interview, you can see how Jerry could be getting irritated.

Torre did release an apology to Jerry though.

Said Torre: "I apologize to Jerry Manuel and all the other managers. I don't blame them. I know they don't want to get stepped on. I know in answering questions [Monday] and having a press conference, I know what my intention was. Unfortunately, I can't get on the other side of it and see how it's received. I would doubt very seriously if there would be anything that would entice me to manage again. This is pretty good duty out here, this franchise and this ballpark. I don't anticipate anything that would make sense for me to manage again.''

Jerry is dying a slow death in New York. Unfortunately, Joe Torre got caught in the crossfire between the media and Jerry this week. Short tempered Jerry does not need much these days to set him off. You just have to feel bad for Jerry because he is an extremely likeable guy, but he is about to be unemployed. Although it is not all Jerry's fault, and I think majority of the blame should be directed at the players and Omar, in this business the manager is who suffers.
