Fresno State in the College World Series- a true Cinderella Story
June 10th 2008 12:58
While all you baseball fans are focused on the rise or decline of your own professional sports affiliate, there is a fantastic story unraveling in Omaha, Nebraska that should garner some attention.
The Fresno State Bulldogs are making a Cinderella run through the College World Series bracket, and have made it to the glorified round of 8, held in Omaha, Nebraska's famous Rosenblatt Stadium.
Fresno State is making its fourth appearance in the CWS round of 8, and its first appearance since 1991. They are the first 4th seeded regional team (4 teams per region) to make it through this far into the bracket.
Just as a bulldog takes down its enemies with force, Freson State has done the same to a highly favored Long Beach State team, as well as the nation's #3 seeded Arizona State, which has more MLB draft picks than I can count, including the Met's first round draft pick, Ike Davis.
Fresno State is pulling off a tournament run of the equivalent, if not a more impressive, than George Mason's run to the final four in College Basketball. The greatest part about this story is that the players of Fresno State aren't looking at signing big bonuses for big league teams at the end of this run. They are playing merely for pride in themselves, and to show everyone that a Bulldog can swing a bat.
Next up for the Bulldogs is Rice, a perennial powerhouse in college baseball. I hope that everyone can enjoy the simple purity of the game, and the amazing run through the CWS bracket that Fresno State is riding.
The story of this team can be enjoyed by sportsfans of all types and ages, as an underdog story never gets old.
