Mets Maniac - The New Site for the New York Metropolitans

My blog has taken over this domain. Therefore, this will be the new location for "New York Metropolitans."

K-Rod Out Due to KO

August 18th 2010 04:57

Bad luck truly follows the Mets and that was proven once again in the last twenty four hours. Francisco Rodriguez sustained a torn thumb ligament which will sideline him for the rest of the 2010 season. The injury was believed to have occurred in the incident last Wednesday with his girlfriend's father.

The Mets responded today by placing Rodriguez on the disqualified list. Francisco will not be paid during his time on the DQ list and the Mets are trying to convert his contract into a non-guaranteed contract. This would allow the Mets to void the remainder of his three-year $37 million dollar contract.

By being placed on the disqualified list, Rodriguez will be losing about 26% of his 2010 salary. Including his money that he lost by being put on the restricted list last week for two days, this incident has cost Rodriguez $3.1 million dollars. That is an expensive altercation!

Furthermore, by converting his contract to non-guaranteed the Mets gave themselves the option to release Rodriguez and save themselves a good amount of money. The Mets would owe Rodriguez for a 30 day termination pay, along with a $3.5 million dollar buyout which is in his deal. However, that's a small amount compared to his $11.5 million dollar salary for next year.

This all follows the August 11th altercation where Rodriguez punched his girlfriend's father in the face following the Mets 6-2 to the Rockies. Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree harassment.

A few things bother me here. First, the man punched his own girlfriend's 53-year-old father. Second, this dispute happened in the family room of Citi Field. This room is where the player's families can go to wait for their loved ones to shower and change to leave. This room was filled with women and children. This is completely unacceptable and you just have to ask what is next with this organization. I commend the Mets for making the effort to release K-Rod because this guy is a bad guy. There is no way around it; he is just a bad guy and a cancer for the organization at this point. Not to mention he is on the decline in his career. There is no place for this in the organization, especially with the season going the way it is. Lastly, to know the player's union is going to back K-Rod is tough to accept. How can you back a guy like this? I understand that this is exactly why there is a union but this is just tough to accept, especially because there is a good chance the Mets will not be able to void his contract. We shall see in the upcoming days and weeks.
