My Thoughts on Mets Walter Reed Visit
September 10th 2010 17:48
By now it is all over the news. The Mets made their yearly visit to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center this week while in DC playing the Nationals. Although it is optional, it is a team organized event. More importantly it is just a nice thing to do for the wounded soldiers who went overseas fighting for our freedom. 29 out of 33 Mets showed up for the event. Dillon Gee, who started the night before, was excused from attending the event. Can you guess who the other three Mets who did not show up were? Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez.
I waited for their excused before I let my criticism out. Not to my surprise at all, they didn't have great explanations.
Beltran stated he had a meeting in regards to his own charity in Puerto Rico and was upset he was called out.
Oliver Perez looked like a fool declining to comment in regards to any questions by reporters related to his attendance to the event.
Luis Castillo looked like the biggest fool of them all by his quotes about not being able to see wounded soldiers because it makes him "queasy."
"Sometimes when you see people with no legs, no arms, [from] when they fight, and to also be in the hospital like that, I don't like to see that."
Upper management, who made a special trip to the hospital to signify the importance of the event, was also furious with the three. There was even a clubhouse meeting beforehand urging all players to show up.
It is typical Mets fashion for them to be in the news for everything but their play. It is becoming an embarrassment to be a Mets fan because of this nonsense. This has seemed like a pretty split issue from what I have seen and read. Some people made the argument that it was optional and you can’t fault them. Others say they are offended. Either way, they look horrible. They have clearly made a divide in the clubhouse and all three of them need to go. Although it is unlikely, at least get rid of Castillo and Perez. They cannot, CANNOT, be on the team next year.
I can understand giving Beltran a pass, you would like to see him schedule a meeting around a team event but I guess things happen. But for Ollie to decline a comment is cowardly. If you are not going to show up to an event like that, be man enough to answer why. And for Castillo, of all people to talk about things making them "queasy;" these guys are out fighting for you, so you can wake up in your mansion everyday and play baseball. In my opinion, Castillo's overall baseball ability and attitude is what should truly make someone "queasy."
