A Diamond in the Rough

R.A. Dickey was sensational yet again tonight to earn his eleventh win of the season. He pitched a complete game five-hitter allowing one run.
98 of Dickey's 127 pitches were knuckleballs.
"They asked me if I wanted to finish, I said, 'Absolutely,' and that was it," Dickey said. "I think it's been nice over the course of the season I've pitched in such a way to earn that."
I cannot say enough about R.A. Dickey this year. The guy has be everything you could have asked for and more for this team. I guess the major argument with Dickey is: can he repeat next year? Unfortunately, I think many people won't have much confidence in Dickey that he can repeat this season next year because of his prior track record. I would have to disagree, though. I think Dickey is extremely capable of repeating the season he is having this year. I have seen Dickey in past years, and there is one significant difference I have seen in him this year over other years he has been in the bigs; CONFIDENCE. Dickey is a pure competitor who has 100% confidence in himself on the mound. The old saying goes, "baseball is 90% mental and 10% physical." Dickey isn't throwing five different pitches. He is throwing almost solely all knuckleballs. Over 90% of his pitches are knuckleballs. Even when his knuckleball isn't dancing like it should he knows how to stick with it and use good location, while working in his fastball. Yes, he has gotten hurt with the long ball, but it hasn't killed him at all. R.A. Dickey is here to stay.
