Mets Maniac - The New Site for the New York Metropolitans

My blog has taken over this domain. Therefore, this will be the new location for "New York Metropolitans."

The Mets have announced Rod Barajas was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers today. That will bring Barajas's short lived Mets career to a close. Barajas hit .225 with 12 home runs and 34 RBI in 74 games with the club. Barajas started the season hot leading the team with home runs; however he cooled down since the opening months only hitting one homer after May. He also had a DL stint for an oblique issue.

This will pave the way for young Josh Thole to get a majority of the starts behind the plate. Since Barajas was activated from the DL, the Mets were carrying three catchers.

"If I'm going to have a chance to catch every day, awesome," Thole said. "If I'm going to be the left-handed bat off the bench, awesome too. I'm ready. I've been working with all the starters in the bullpen developing good relationships with all the guys."

However, Thole will get a day off today as the Mets give the ball to their ace, Johan Santana, to put a bow on the first season sweep of an NL team this season. The Mets go for the sweep today in Pittsburgh. Though the Mets have played better this weekend, they are playing the 40-83 Pirates. But you have to beat who is on the schedule, and the Mets showed signs of putting the pieces together this weekend. As of today, the Mets are 7.5 games behind the wild card leading Phillies.

With the move of Barajas, it certainly looks as if the Mets are looking towards 2011. For the Mets to realistically have a shot at the wild card, they would have to play .600 ball the rest of the way at the least. That certainly does not seem possible the way the Mets have gone the second half of the season.

But for all you optimistic fans out there, it is 1-0 Mets after two innings in Pittsburgh.
