It was a battle of two pitchers making their debuts Tuesday night at Nationals Park. Mets pitcher, Dillon Gee, out pitched Yunesky Maya to win his first big league game. Dillon Gee didn't look as if the big stage affected him tonight as he took a no hitter into the sixth inning before Mets killer, Willie Harris, led off with a homerun. With young pitchers, a homerun like that could've opened the flood gates for a big inning, but not for Gee. He continued on to retire seven straight and did not allow another run.
Gee's line was: 7IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, and struck out 4.
Gee got the start after Johan Santana was scratched due to a pulled pectoral muscle.
With the Mets playing out the rest of their games it's great to see all the "kids" up and in the lineup. A local New York radio station made a good point a few days ago regarding that fact. Most years, when the Mets are playing meaningless September baseball, you will see a bunch of guys playing that you know won't be on the team next year. This year you look at the lineup day in and day out and you see guys competing for jobs for next year. Or you see minor league players getting some work in and improving for the future. I like see the Ruben Tejada's of the world and the Dillon Gee's of the world. I have disagreed with many moves Jerry has made this year; however I am glad he is utilizing his farm in this meaningless month. It may be meaningless this year, but by playing these kids they are turning it around into a positive for the organization for years to come.
