No Ollie, No

If all hope wasn't lost already for Mets fans, Jerry was asked if Oliver Perez is a candidate for the Saturday start against the Phillies. "It's an outside chance," responded Manuel. This quote made me want to go on a little rant here. This basic question and answer is exactly what is wrong with the New York Mets organization. For Oliver Perez to be able to look himself in the mirror after receiving a paycheck is shameful on his part.
The three years $36 million dollar contract that is Oliver Perez's contract is, in my opinion, one of the biggest jokes in Mets history. Might I add this was offered after his abysmal 2008 year where he went 10-7 with an ERA over 4 and a career high in walks. One may ask, what are his numbers in his five year Mets career? In 91 starts his posted a 29-28 record with an ERA 4.69. If you ask me, that seems quite average for someone making his amount of money. Unfortunately, Oliver Perez has been built up throughout the years as being this young lefty who can throw hard. Year after year he doesn't produce results.
Now Oliver Perez practically has the Mets handcuffed because ownership refuses to cut him and with the clause in his contract he needs to okay being sent down to the minors. And that leads us to today. Basically just taking up a roster spot, Ollie is clearly a last resort for Jerry and Dan Warthen. He has not pitched since August 1, where he gave up four earned runs in two innings. It is truly ludicrous to think the Mets are considering him for a start, against the Phillies no less.
My question for the Mets is what does Pat Misch have to do to get a start? He is having a great year with Buffalo at 11-4 with a pretty good ERA of 3.22. I think this is the way to go. Also, with the rosters expanding September 1, it could be possible to convince Ollie to go down for two weeks where he actually will get some starts. So, what will the Mets do? I think their decision will suggest exactly what they think of the rest of the 2010 season.
