Mets Maniac - FOR ALL YOUR BASEBALL CRAVINGS

Rain Delays Cause Depression

June 15th 2008 05:39
Mind you this advice for Rain Delay Depression is all from experience:

Rain delays have recently been researched to cause severe depression amongst baseball fans ages 12-63 who attend baseball games.

If the following situation describes yourself, please see a doctor for medication and prognosis. You have been diagnosed with depression due to a rain delay for a great baseball game. Especially if it was Pedro making his valiant return to Shea, or the feel-good story of Josh Hamilton batting in the opposing center field:

You are of the above age

You have been to a Mets game (or game at another place other than Shea Stadium) within the past 47 days, especially around June 14th.

You went to a game, and after fighting through the rain to get to Shea, you spent your money on parking, tickets, and 3 Premio sausages, 2 popcorns, and the 7 buck DEAL from the misc. food counter where they sell the chicken fingers with the fries. What a deal.

You have spent all this cash-money on food and parking and transportation (gas or train ticket), and you have been misled that the game will be played eventually, once the storm passes through. And even though you see lighting strike the adjacent stadium, such as Citi Field next to Shea, the intercom in the stadium makes a POINT, that the storm will be passing through within the half-hour, so you stay in the rain and hope.

So after this announcement you feel like the game is going to proceed, so you get more hotdogs, overpriced beer, and another Premio sausage. The Mets organization, at this point, has now made itself a few more grand in cash due to a simple lie to the fans about the weather.

Clearly you realize that the storm is too consistent and strong to be cleared that soon, it's an absolute monsoon in the Stadium!! But the folks in the Shea Stadium weather tower have made you a prediction, and you trust their equipment better than my own logic. What a fool!

You stay at the stadium with hope of seeing this fantastic baseball game, only to be told that the game has been postponed to tomorrow's double header. You are now forced to run through the pouring rain to the LIRR and make sure not to get a seat next to someone of larger proportions.

Your day was once ruined by a rain delay.

My point in this is that rain delays can seriously make someone lose their nerve, like the twelfth roll in a perfect bowling frame. It has the power to consume the greenbacks in your wallet and be ruthless in bringing the entertainment that your ticket stub desires.

Rain Delays are evil to the sportsfan, a betrayal of loyalty to an unwritten agreement between the fan and the team. They are never deserved of by any fan, no matter how many times they have booed their own ace.

If you have suffered from any of the stated conditions, and feel that you have been denied your deserved baseball game, then please feel free to call the National Weather Service, and ask them to cooperate better the Big Guy upstairs who controls all that stuff.

Chances are though, when you look at yourself in the reflection of the seatback on the LIRR on your way home from the postponed game, you will probably reveal to yourself that your frusturations and badmouthings of your own team in the open deserved a little payback.
