The Art of the Home Run Call
June 11th 2008 01:40
"AND IT'S OUTTA HERE!"
Gary Cohen, the television voice on SNY for the New York Mets, has managed to turn the homerun call into the simplest and most appreciated art forms in baseball. Even his call for the opposing team, though devastating to the average Mets fan, can still be appreciated due to his raspy uptake, and sudden explosion as the ball goes over the fence.
"He hits it deep, the outfielder looks back at the wall..... and...... ITS OUTTA HERE!"
It is the quintessential unbiased, excited homer call that every baseball fan can appreciate. Many announcers, such as those on YES network, or John Miller on ESPN, tend to either be clearly more excited for their favored team, or lack any excitement whatsoever for any plays during the game. John Miller's announcing makes my old math teacher in high school sound exciting.
Gary Cohen manages to have found the perfect home run call, in addition to his many other unique talents as an extremely talented fan, and an educated spectator. Growing up a Mets fan in Queens, NY, Gary Cohen used to attend several Mets games a season from the last row in Shea Stadium. This is exactly the kind of announcer that every team should be so privileged to listen to throughout their television broadcasts.
SNY has put together an all-star crew of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling (emmy winner), which has allowed me as a Mets fan to watch every Mets game, even while losing in a horrendous fashion, due to the entertainment of the SNY crew, and especially the eagerness of hearing Gary Cohen's home run call. "It's Outta Here!"
I feel privileged, especially in front of Yankees fans, to have such a great crew working for the Mets on SNY.
I now leave this question to you, the readers of this blog
1) What qualities make for a good home run call?
and
2) Who has the best home run call in baseball?
